Refuse Disposal

*** Free Yard Waste Dump Day ***

The Town will hold a free Yard Waste Dump Day on Saturday, June 2nd, 2012 from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Elba residents may dispose of their leaves, brush, and tree limbs at the Town Transfer Station on Hundredmark Road.

Residents will be responsible for unloading their own yard waste from their vehicles. All yard waste must be removed from plastic bags and synthetic twine.

*** A note to the Town of Elba residents ***

At the September meeting, the Elba Town Board voted unanimously to discontinue refuse and recycling collection service at the Town transfer station at the end of the year.

For more than a decade, the Town transfer station has operated at an annual deficit. Revenues have not offset the operating expenses.

Over the past few years, the Town Board has made attempts to decrease the expenses (decreasing the hours and negotiating to reduce the dumpster service costs) and increase the revenues (increasing the fee per garbage bag and charging for “dump day”) to narrow the deficit gap, but our town budget can no longer afford to subsidize this service.

Less than 100 Town of Elba households purchase garbage bag “punch-cards” every year. To help these town residents choose a refuse disposal service, we have obtained information from three area refuse collection businesses.

Watch for yard waste disposal information in the spring of 2012.

Paper Recycling:

The Elba Central School Field and Stream club has a paper recycling receptacle in the school visitors' parking lot. Elba residents are encouraged to drop off their paper recyclables at this bin. This is a fund raiser for the club and the money earned will help fund their conservation activities.

The following items will be accepted at the school bin: junk mail, notebooks, folders, catalogs, newspapers, magazines, empty cereal boxes, etc.

The following will not be accepted: corrugated cardboard, phone books or any bound books.
